What does a hybrid service include?
A proper hybrid service covers the combustion side and the electric side together:
- Engine oil and filter change (hybrids still need this, usually every 10,000 miles)
- Hybrid battery state-of-health scan and cell balance report
- Inverter and power control unit coolant check
- Hybrid battery cooling fan and filter clean, a very common neglected item
- Electric motor and generator diagnostics
- Regenerative braking system check
- Brake fluid test and pad inspection (hybrid pads often last far longer, but the fluid still degrades)
- 12V auxiliary battery test, the single most common cause of a hybrid that will not start
- Spark plugs, air filter and cabin filter per the service schedule
- Software and firmware updates where available
Expect two to three hours for a full hybrid service.
How often should a hybrid be serviced?
Most manufacturers recommend a hybrid service every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. That is more frequent than a pure EV because the petrol engine still needs oil and filters.
The hybrid battery cooling fan should be cleaned at every other service. On Toyota and Lexus hybrids in particular, a clogged cooling fan is one of the most common causes of premature battery module failure, and it is a cheap fix if caught early.
How much does hybrid servicing cost in the UK?
A typical UK hybrid service costs between £150 and £300 depending on the vehicle and service level. Interim services start around £110; a full service including a hybrid battery health report usually runs £200 to £300.
Independent hybrid specialists are commonly 20 to 40 per cent cheaper than a main dealer for the same work, and many will provide a written battery state-of-health report that a dealer will not give you without a paid diagnostic.
Hybrid battery health, repair and replacement
Hybrid batteries rarely fail all at once. They fail one module at a time, which is why a specialist can often rebuild or recondition a pack for a fraction of the cost of a new one.
A main dealer will typically quote for a complete replacement pack. An independent hybrid specialist can frequently diagnose the weak modules, replace only those, and rebalance the pack. On an older Prius or Auris that can be the difference between a few hundred pounds and a few thousand.
If your dashboard is showing a hybrid system warning, or your fuel economy has dropped noticeably, get a battery health scan before you accept any quote for a full replacement.
Why use a hybrid specialist rather than a general garage?
A general garage can do a hybrid oil change, tyres and brakes perfectly well. What it usually cannot do is diagnose the high-voltage system, read the individual battery module voltages, or safely isolate the pack for work near the orange cabling. That needs IMI Level 3 or Level 4 qualification, insulated tools and the right diagnostic software.
Booking with a qualified hybrid specialist also protects your warranty. Most manufacturers require evidence that high-voltage work was carried out by a trained technician. Every garage listed on The EV Pros is verified and trust-scored, and many are HEVRA-approved.
