What separates a good EV dealership

Any dealer can park an electric car on the forecourt. The good ones can also:

  • Show you the battery state of health, measured with proper diagnostic equipment, not just quote the dashboard range guess
  • Explain the remaining battery warranty, which typically runs 8 years or 100,000 miles from first registration and follows the car, not the owner
  • Hand over the full charging kit, including the granny cable and any public charging accounts or cards that go with the car
  • Answer charging questions for your situation, home wallbox, on-street or public rapid, without waffle
  • Support the software side, from infotainment accounts to scheduled charging setup on handover

If a seller cannot do these things, it does not make the car bad, but it does mean you are doing your own homework. The free tools on this site cover most of it.

Buying a used EV: the three checks that matter

Used EVs are often excellent value, because early depreciation is steep while the mechanicals barely wear. Protect yourself with three checks:

  • History: run the reg through our free EV check for the full MOT history, advisories and a mileage timeline that flags readings which go backwards
  • Battery health: ask the dealer for a measured state of health figure, and if they cannot produce one, book an independent battery health check with an EV specialist before you agree a price
  • Charging test: before handover, see the car charge on both AC and, for longer-range cars, a rapid charger. Faults in the on-board charger or charge port are far cheaper to find before you buy

A healthy used EV with a measured battery report is one of the safest used car purchases there is. An unmeasured one is a guess.

After the purchase: keep the warranty working for you

The battery warranty is the most valuable piece of paper that comes with an EV. Keeping it intact usually means an annual service with a garage that has the training and equipment for high voltage work, and keeping records.

The EV Pros directory lists verified EV specialists across the UK for exactly this. Every listing carries a trust score updated nightly, so you can pick a garage for the annual service, MOT and any battery work with confidence.

EV Dealerships FAQs

Common questions UK drivers ask about ev dealerships.

Are used electric cars a good buy?
Often, yes. EVs depreciate quickly early on while the drivetrain barely wears, so a three or four year old EV with a healthy battery can be strong value. The key is a measured battery state of health figure rather than a guess.
What should I ask an EV dealership before buying?
Ask for the battery state of health report, the remaining battery warranty terms and dates, the full charging kit and cables, the service history, and whether the car has any outstanding recalls. A good EV dealer will have all of this to hand.
Does the battery warranty transfer to a new owner?
Yes. Manufacturer battery warranties follow the car, typically 8 years or 100,000 miles from first registration, whichever comes first. Check the exact terms for the specific make and model.
How do I check a used EV before buying?
Run the reg through the free EV check on this site for MOT history and a mileage timeline, then book an independent battery health check and pre purchase inspection with an EV specialist from the directory. Together they cover the history and the hardware.
Can I get an EV inspected before I buy it?
Yes, and for a used EV it is strongly recommended. Many EV specialists in the directory offer pre purchase inspections including a battery state of health reading, which tells you how much of the original range remains.
