What the numbers show
The UK passed two million fully electric cars in April 2026, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, and the total now stands above 2.1 million. Electric models took 30 percent of the new car market in June 2026. The cars are arriving faster than the visible repair trade behind them.
To measure that trade, we did what a stranded driver would do: we ran EV repair and servicing searches for 127 towns and cities covering every part of the UK, then individually checked the website of every garage that came up, 2,298 websites in all, alongside every garage already listed with us. Garages qualify for the directory only with evidence: their own website advertising electric or hybrid vehicle work, an explicit EV trading name, independent vetting, or the business managing its listing itself. Garages without any evidence were removed.
The result is 997 listed EV repairers across the UK, roughly one for every 2,100 electric cars on the road, and the gap widens every month as older electric cars fall out of manufacturer warranty and into the independent repair market.
The spread is heavily uneven. The South East (172 listed repairers) and South West (133) are the best served. The North East of England has 40. Northern Ireland, a nation of 1.9 million people, has 14. A driver in Belfast whose EV develops a fault outside warranty has dramatically fewer specialist options than one in Surrey.
High voltage systems can deliver fatal shocks, and working on them safely requires specific training, insulated tooling and insurance. The barrier for ordinary garages is competence and safety rather than law, which is why transparent, evidence-checked listings matter as the first wave of electric cars ages out of warranty.
Methodology
Figures are from The EV Pros directory (theevpros.com), snapshotted on 19 July 2026: 1,333 active UK electric and hybrid vehicle businesses, of which 997 offer servicing, repair or diagnostics. Car dealerships and vehicle sales businesses (336) are excluded from repair capacity counts. Businesses are assigned to standard UK regions and nations from the ONS region of their postcode, resolved via postcodes.io.
In July 2026 we verified the directory end to end. We ran two search phrasings for EV repair and servicing against 127 UK towns and cities (254 local searches), assessed nearly 2,900 candidate garages, and fetched and read 2,298 garage websites for electric or hybrid service claims. 890 of the 997 listed repairers (89.3 percent) advertise electric or hybrid vehicle work on their own websites; the remainder qualify through an explicit EV trading name, independent vetting or a business-managed listing. Listings with no supporting evidence were removed from the directory as part of this exercise.
The directory is not a census: franchised dealer workshops service the makes they sell, and capable garages that do not advertise EV work online will not appear. It is, to our knowledge, the largest open, individually evidence-checked directory of EV capable garages in the UK. Electric car totals and market share are from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and Department for Transport licensing statistics, first half of 2026.
