Common EV repairs we cover

EV-qualified specialists handle a much wider range of work than most owners realise. Through the EV Pros directory you can find specialists for:

  • High-voltage battery fault diagnosis, module rebalancing and replacement
  • Electric motor (stator/rotor) repair and replacement
  • Inverter, DC-DC converter and on-board charger fault repair
  • 12V auxiliary system faults (which can cause confusing "no-go" symptoms on an EV)
  • Regenerative braking system faults
  • Charging port and CCS / Type 2 inlet repair
  • Cooling system leaks and pump failures
  • Software and firmware updates / coding
  • EV-specific suspension and brake work (heavier kerb weight than ICE equivalents)
  • Crash damage and bodywork (only EV-approved bodyshops can safely work around the HV battery)

IMI levels: what they mean for you

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) is the UK's recognised body for EV technician training. The levels you'll see on The EV Pros listings are:

  • IMI Level 1 — EV awareness only. Cannot work on high-voltage systems.
  • IMI Level 2 — Can carry out routine maintenance with the battery isolated, but not fault diagnosis on live HV systems.
  • IMI Level 3 — Full fault diagnosis and repair on high-voltage systems.
  • IMI Level 4 — Repair of damaged battery packs and components.

For most repairs you'll want Level 3 minimum. Battery rebuild work requires Level 4.

Diagnostic tools that matter

A reputable EV repair specialist will have manufacturer-grade diagnostic equipment for the brands they service: Topdon, Autel MaxiSys EV, Texa Multi-Hub, or OEM-specific tools (ODIS for VW Group, Pico Diagnostics for high-voltage waveform analysis). Generic OBD-II scanners can't read most EV-specific fault codes.

When you contact a garage through The EV Pros, ask which tools and battery brands they're trained on — every listing shows the technician's qualifications and supported makes.

How to choose the right EV repair specialist

Three things to check:

1. Qualifications. Look for IMI Level 3 (or Level 4 for battery rebuilds). HEVRA membership is a strong additional signal.

2. Make familiarity. Some specialists focus on Tesla, others on VW Group, BMW i-series, or Japanese hybrids. The right tool for the job matters.

3. Trust Score. Our Trust Score combines reviews, qualifications, accreditations and customer history into one number, updated nightly. Anything above 70 is a strong choice.

EV Repair FAQs

Common questions UK drivers ask about ev repair.

Can any garage repair an electric car?
No. High-voltage work legally requires IMI Level 3 or Level 4 certification. General garages can do tyres, brakes, suspension and 12V work, but cannot diagnose or repair the traction battery, motor or inverter.
How much does an EV repair cost?
It varies enormously. A 12V battery replacement might be £80–£150. A high-voltage module rebalance can be £400–£900. A full battery pack rebuild can run into thousands. Always get a written quote and a second opinion for major work.
Will my warranty cover an EV repair?
Most new EVs have an 8-year / 100,000-mile battery warranty and a 3–7 year vehicle warranty. Independent EV specialists can carry out warranty-respecting work if they keep evidence of qualifications and use approved parts.
What's the difference between a hybrid mechanic and an EV specialist?
Many specialists do both — but the diagnostic equipment and battery architecture differ. A pure-EV specialist will have deeper experience on high-voltage faults; a hybrid specialist is more used to combined ICE+EV systems.
How do I find an IMI-qualified EV mechanic near me?
Search The EV Pros directory by postcode. Each listing shows the qualifications held, supported makes and Trust Score, so you can pick the right specialist in one place.
