What is V2L?
A V2L adapter plugs into the charge port where the charging cable would go. Instead of power flowing into the car, it flows out to a normal socket on the adapter. You switch it on from the car, and the car stops it at a battery level you choose, so you always keep enough to drive.
V2L is for plugging appliances in. V2H (vehicle to home) and V2G (vehicle to grid) feed a house or the grid, and need a special bidirectional charger and a proper installation. A V2L adapter can never do that job, and must never be connected to house wiring.
Which cars have V2L in the UK?
These are the cars in our guides with confirmed V2L through the charge port. Each name links to that car's charging guide.
| Brand | Models with V2L | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Hyundai | Ioniq 5, Ioniq 5 58kWh, Ioniq 6, Inster | Shares its V2L plug with Kia and Genesis |
| Kia | EV6, EV3, EV5, Niro EV | Niro EV from 2022 only. The earlier e-Niro has no V2L. |
| MG | MG4 SE, MG4 Trophy Long Range, ZS EV Long Range | Some ZS EVs delivered from mid 2023 have V2L switched off. Check the menu. |
| BYD | Atto 3, Seal, Dolphin, Sealion 7 | |
| Renault | Renault 5 E-Tech, Renault 4 E-Tech |
Our adapter is also made for V2L capable models from Genesis, Smart, Alpine, Dacia, Omoda, Jaecoo, Farizon and Leapmotor. Not every model from a V2L brand supports it, and manufacturers sometimes switch it off on later cars, so the menu in your own car has the final say.
UK Tesla Model 3 and Model Y cars do not offer V2L through the charge port, and our adapter is not made for Tesla.
What can V2L power?
Most cars cap V2L at about 3.6kW, and some at less, so check the handbook for yours. One at a time, that covers almost anything with a normal UK plug: a kettle at around 3kW sits near the top, a laptop or a string of lights barely registers.
If you run several things at once, add their wattage up and stay under the limit. Anything that heats, such as a kettle, a heater or a hob, uses far more than anything that only runs a motor or a screen.
It uses less battery than people expect. A 3kW kettle boiling for three minutes takes about 0.15kWh, well under a mile of range. A 2kW heater running for an hour takes 2kWh, roughly 7 miles.
How to use V2L safely
- Appliances only. Never connect a V2L adapter to a house, a consumer unit, a caravan hook up inlet or any fixed wiring.
- Outdoors, use a waterproof socket version and keep the socket end off wet ground.
- Check the appliance's rating plate before you plug in anything that heats up.
- Set the battery level where V2L switches off, so you can always drive home.
- Unplug the appliance before you unplug the adapter from the car.
Choosing a V2L adapter
The plug that goes into the car is made for each brand, so a Hyundai adapter will not fit an MG. Pick your brand first, then the socket and the length.
- Socket: UK single or double, waterproof single or double for outdoor use, Schuko for European appliances, or a blue 16A socket for camping kit.
- Length: a short 0.5m tail if the appliance sits by the car, or up to 15m to reach a tent, a garden or a workbench while the car stays on the drive.
Our V2L adapter is built to order in the UK by Wottz, from £96.03 including VAT in October 2026, depending on the brand, socket and length.
