Kia EV5 Air Charging Time

The Kia EV5 Air has a 78kWh usable battery, accepts up to 11kW on AC and peaks at 150kW on DC rapid chargers. Here is how long a charge really takes on every common charger type, from a 3-pin plug to the fastest rapid it can use.

Kia EV5 Air charging slower than it should?

Charging faults are usually the car, the cable or the charger. Get a local EV specialist to check it.

Charging the Kia EV5 Air at home

A 7kW home wallbox is the workhorse. From 10% to 80% takes about 8h 40m, and a full charge from empty about 12h 23m, which fits comfortably overnight. On a cheap overnight tariff window, that is also the cheapest way to run the car by a distance.

A standard 3-pin socket manages around 2.3kW. A full charge that way takes roughly 37h 41m, so treat it as a backup rather than a routine. A spare granny cable for the boot, or a Type 2 cable for untethered public posts, is in our EV charging cables and chargers collection, built to order in the UK by Wottz.

The car's on-board AC charger takes up to 11kW, so on a 22kW public AC post it still charges at 11kW: about 5h 31m for 10 to 80%.

To get the full 11kW on a three phase public post, use a 22kW Type 2 cable. A 7.4kW cable works but caps the car at 7.4kW. At home on single phase, a 7.4kW cable already gives full speed. More on which EV charging cable you need.

Rapid charging on trips

On a 50kW rapid charger, 10 to 80% takes about 1h 32m. On a rapid charger that can match the car's 150kW peak, that drops to about 37 minutes.

These are real-world estimates, not brochure figures: cars only hold their peak rate for part of the session, and the rate tapers steeply above 80% to protect the battery. That is why topping up to 80% and driving on beats waiting for 100% on every trip.

Cold batteries charge slower. In winter, expect the first rapid stop of the day to run behind these times until the pack warms up.

Powering appliances from the Kia EV5 Air (V2L)

The Kia EV5 Air supports vehicle to load, or V2L. With a V2L adapter in the charge port, the car's battery becomes a 230V mains supply for a laptop, power tools, a camping hob, or lights and a fridge in a power cut. The handbook gives the most it will supply, so check that before plugging in anything that heats up.

Our V2L cable for Hyundai and Kia cars is built to order in the UK by Wottz. You choose the socket (UK single or double, waterproof, Schuko or blue 16A) and a lead from 0.5m to 15m, so the socket can reach a tent, a garden or a workbench while the car stays on the drive.

Most cars let you set a battery level where V2L switches off, so you always keep enough charge to drive.

More on what it can run, and which other cars have it, in our V2L guide.

FAQs

How long does a Kia EV5 Air take to charge at home?
On a 7kW home wallbox, about 8h 40m from 10% to 80%, or about 12h 23m for a full charge from empty. An overnight plug-in covers it easily.
How fast does a Kia EV5 Air rapid charge?
The Kia EV5 Air peaks at 150kW on DC. A 10 to 80% top up takes about 37 minutes on a suitably fast charger, or about 1h 32m on a standard 50kW unit.
Can the Kia EV5 Air charge from a normal plug socket?
Yes, using the supplied granny cable at about 2.3kW, but a full charge takes roughly 37h 41m. It works for emergencies and trickle top ups, not daily use.
Why do charging times slow above 80%?
The car deliberately reduces the charging rate as the battery fills to protect the cells. The last 20% can take as long as the previous 40%, which is why 10 to 80% is the sensible rapid charging habit.
Does the Kia EV5 Air have V2L?
Yes. The Kia EV5 Air supports vehicle to load through its charge port, so with a V2L adapter it can run 230V appliances from the battery. Check the handbook for the maximum power it supplies.
