Tesla Model S out of warranty: independents vs Tesla (2026)

Updated 30 May 2026 · The EV Pros editorial team
Your Tesla Model S has rolled past its warranty, and the first out-of-warranty service quote has landed. The question almost every owner asks at this point is simple: keep going back to a Tesla service centre, or move to an independent EV specialist?
We built The EV Pros to make that choice easier. Across the 760+ EV garages listed on the directory, a clear pattern shows up: for routine, out-of-warranty work, a qualified independent is usually cheaper and quicker, while Tesla centres keep the edge on software-locked jobs and parts only Tesla supplies. Here is the honest breakdown.
The short version
- Once your Model S is out of warranty, you can use any competent EV garage. There is no warranty left to affect.
- Independent EV specialists are typically 20 to 40% cheaper than main dealers on routine servicing, brakes, suspension and diagnostics.
- Tesla service centres still win for recalls, software-gated repairs, and high-voltage parts only Tesla supplies.
- For most annual servicing on an older Model S, a qualified independent is the better-value call.
What actually changes when your Model S leaves warranty
A new Tesla Model S comes with a 4 year / 50,000 mile basic vehicle warranty and an 8 year battery and drive unit warranty, as set out on Tesla's UK warranty page. While any of that cover is live, it makes sense to let Tesla handle anything that might be a warranty claim, so there is no argument later about who did the work.
Once the basic warranty has expired, that reason disappears. You are paying for every repair yourself either way, so the only things that matter are price, competence and convenience. Tesla itself confirms that for non-warranty work you can use a Tesla service centre or your preferred non-Tesla garage. If your 8 year battery and drive unit cover is still running, keep major battery or motor work inside Tesla. For everything else, the field is open.
The honest cost comparison
Tesla does not publish fixed service prices in the UK. It moved to condition-based maintenance years ago, so you pay for specific jobs at the service centre labour rate. Tesla owners have reported out-of-warranty labour rates around £145 per hour at UK service centres (Tesla owner forums, 2025). Independents publish flat prices, which makes them easy to compare.
Here is a representative comparison using published independent pricing from Cleevely EV Mobile, an established independent Tesla specialist (prices as listed in May 2026):
| Job | Tesla service centre | Independent EV specialist |
|---|---|---|
| Labour rate | ~£145/hour (owner-reported, 2025) | Often £90 to £120/hour |
| Annual / minor service | Priced per job, no fixed package | £195 + VAT |
| End-of-warranty inspection | Not offered as a set package | £195 + VAT |
| Major service (every 2 years) | Priced per job | £320 + VAT |
| Battery health test (add-on) | Diagnostic, charged at labour rate | £35 + VAT |
The gap is widest on the bread-and-butter jobs: brake fluid, cabin filters, suspension arms, bushes and 12V battery replacement. These are standard workshop tasks that do not need Tesla software, so a good independent does them for less. The gap narrows or closes on anything that needs Tesla's diagnostic access or genuine parts routed through Tesla.
Where a Tesla service centre still wins
It is worth being clear: the dealer route is not just there to charge more. A Tesla service centre is the right call when:
- There is an open recall or service bulletin. These are handled free, and only Tesla can close them off against your VIN.
- The fault is software-locked. Some repairs need Tesla's Toolbox diagnostic access to pair new parts to the car. Independents are closing this gap, but Tesla still has the deepest access.
- You need a genuine high-voltage component fast. Battery packs, drive units and some control modules are easiest to source through Tesla.
- Your battery and drive unit warranty is still live. Keep that specific work inside Tesla until the 8 year cover ends.
Where an independent EV specialist wins
For an out-of-warranty Model S, a qualified independent usually comes out ahead on:
- Routine servicing at a published, flat price, often 20 to 40% below dealer cost.
- Brakes, suspension and steering. Standard mechanical work where dealer labour rates sting most.
- Waiting times. Independents tend to book you in sooner than a busy Tesla centre.
- A named technician who talks you through the work, rather than an app and a service advisor.
The deciding factor is usually the qualification of the people doing the work. EV servicing involves a high-voltage system that can be dangerous if handled by an untrained mechanic. Always ask the garage to confirm they are IMI Level 3 or Level 4 qualified for high-voltage work, and look for membership of HEVRA, the Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Repair Alliance.
Does using an independent void anything?
On an out-of-warranty car, no. There is no manufacturer warranty left to invalidate. The only caveat is the 8 year battery and drive unit cover, which runs longer than the basic warranty. If that is still live and the issue touches the battery or motor, use Tesla for that specific job so there is no dispute. For routine servicing, brakes, suspension, tyres and 12V faults, an independent has no bearing on the high-voltage warranty.
Verified independent Tesla specialists on The EV Pros
Here are three EV specialists listed on the directory that handle Tesla work. Each is independently verified, and none has paid for placement here:
- Testec Automotive & EV (West Sussex). HEVRA-approved, covering battery services, diagnostics, drivetrain and suspension. One of the higher-rated EV specialists on the directory.
- EVHERO Electric Vehicle and Tesla Specialist (Lincolnshire). A dedicated Tesla and EV specialist handling battery, diagnostics, charging and software work.
- Shaikly EV Specialists (Essex). Battery services, diagnostics, drivetrain and electronics for EV owners across the East of England.
If none of those is near you, browse the full EV repair specialists hub, the electric car servicing directory, or jump straight to a county: EV repair in Essex, West Sussex or Lincolnshire. What to ask before you book an independent
- Are your technicians IMI Level 3 or Level 4 qualified for high-voltage work?
- Are you a HEVRA member?
- Have you worked on the Model S specifically, and do you have Tesla diagnostic access?
- Can you source genuine or quality-matched parts, and what is the warranty on the work?
- Will the service keep my Tesla service history complete for resale?
Frequently asked questions
Can I service my out-of-warranty Tesla anywhere?
Yes. Once the basic warranty has expired, you can use any competent garage. Tesla confirms you may use a non-Tesla service centre for non-warranty work. Choose one with IMI Level 3 or 4 high-voltage qualified technicians.
Is an independent really cheaper than Tesla?
For routine work, usually yes. Independent EV specialists are typically 20 to 40% cheaper than main dealers on servicing, brakes and suspension. The gap narrows on software-locked repairs or genuine high-voltage parts that route through Tesla.
Will using an independent hurt my Tesla's resale value?
Not if the work is done properly and documented. Keep every invoice and service record. A complete, stamped history from a recognised EV specialist protects resale value just as a dealer history would.
How often does a Tesla Model S need servicing?
Tesla uses condition-based maintenance rather than fixed annual services. Typical items are brake fluid health checks, cabin air filter changes, air-con desiccant replacement and tyre rotation. Most independents offer an annual check that covers these plus a full safety inspection.
Does an independent service affect my battery warranty?
Routine servicing does not. The 8 year battery and drive unit warranty runs longer than the basic warranty, so if that cover is still live, take any battery or motor work to Tesla. Everything else can go to an independent without affecting it.
How to decide
If your Model S has an open recall, a software-locked fault, or live battery and drive unit cover, start with Tesla. For everything else on an out-of-warranty car, a qualified independent EV specialist will almost always save you money and get you booked in sooner. The one rule that matters: make sure whoever opens the bonnet is IMI high-voltage qualified.
