Pure EV service vs hybrid service
A pure-EV service skips:
- Engine oil + filter (no engine)
- Spark plugs
- Fuel filter
- Cambelt / chain check
- Exhaust system check
But adds:
- High-voltage battery state-of-health
- Inverter + motor diagnostic
- Cooling system check (battery + inverter)
A hybrid service includes BOTH the EV components AND the ICE components, which is why hybrids are typically £30–£80 more expensive to service than either a pure EV or an equivalent petrol car.
Service intervals
- Pure EV: annual or 18,000 miles
- Hybrid (HEV): 12 months or 9,000–12,000 miles (engine-driven schedule)
- PHEV: 12 months or 10,000–18,000 miles depending on EV-only mileage
Hybrids that do mostly short electric trips can be harder on the engine (cold-start cycles without warm-up). Some PHEV manufacturers recommend more frequent oil changes for high-EV-usage drivers.
Do I need a different specialist?
For a pure EV: any IMI Level 3+ EV specialist will do.
For a hybrid or PHEV: choose a garage with both EV qualifications and strong ICE experience. The EV Pros lists hybrid-capable specialists separately — search by service type.
Cost comparison
Typical UK service costs (full service, 2026):
- Pure EV: £130–£220
- Hybrid (HEV): £180–£280
- PHEV: £200–£300
