What's Included in an EV Service?

A full EV service should cover four areas: the high-voltage system (battery, motor, inverter), the cooling circuit, the conventional mechanical components (brakes, tyres, suspension), and the auxiliary 12V system. Here's exactly what an IMI-qualified specialist will inspect on each.

The high-voltage system

  • Full diagnostic scan of the battery management system (BMS), with state-of-health and cell-level voltage data
  • Insulation resistance test on the high-voltage cables and connectors
  • Inverter and DC-DC converter diagnostic scan
  • Motor controller scan
  • Regenerative braking system check (one-pedal driving smoothness, regen efficiency)
  • On-board charger fault scan
  • Software / firmware updates where the manufacturer or third-party tool allows

Cooling system

  • Coolant level + condition check (the battery and inverter are liquid-cooled on most modern EVs)
  • Top-up or full flush as required
  • Pump and pipework inspection for leaks
  • Cooling fan operation check

Conventional mechanical checks

  • Brake pads + discs (EVs wear them slower due to regen, but moisture and corrosion build faster too)
  • Brake fluid moisture test (recommended every 2 years)
  • Tyre tread depth, condition, pressure — and a check for the EV-load rating
  • Wheel alignment (heavier kerb weight makes EVs sensitive to misalignment)
  • Suspension components: bushes, springs, shock absorbers
  • Steering: tie-rod ends, CV joints, rack
  • Underbody inspection

12V auxiliary + cabin

  • 12V battery health and charging system check (a flat 12V is the #1 cause of "won't start" on EVs)
  • Cabin air-conditioning + heat-pump performance
  • Pollen filter replacement
  • Wipers, washers, lights, horn
  • Seatbelt + airbag visual check

FAQs

How long does an EV service take?
90 minutes to 3 hours depending on the make and whether a battery health diagnostic is included.
Will my service include a brake fluid change?
Usually only every 2 years. EV brake fluid lasts longer due to less heat cycling, but moisture still builds up.
Do I need to bring anything?
Your V5, current service record (digital or paper) and your key card / fob.
